What is Thai Food?

The Thai cuisine relies on five primary flavors: hot (spicy), sour, sweet, salty, and bitter. The secret to all Thai food lies in the subtle differences in the proportions of ingredients used - which can add layers of flavor and aroma. Another distinguishing feature of Thai cuisine is the combination of flavorings from the different spices including; mint leaves, lime leaves, garlic, ginger, lemongrass, curry, cilantro, galangal, chilli, and basil. The most important is the preparation of spices and herbs, which give Thai dishes their unique flavor and character.

Jasmine rice (fragrant or scented rice) is the most important ingredient in Thai cooking and is the staple food in Thailand. Jasmine rice has a delicate aroma and texture, when cooked the rice is white and fluffy.

Thai desserts are usually based on fruits such as: coconut, rice, or flour. They are often very sweet with a delicate, scented flavor.
